Svínoy and Fugloy

Today I checked Fugloy and Svínoy. It was pretty windy, so it was hard to find the birds – and there weren’t too many. 2 Chiffs, Brambling, 3 Blackcaps and a Lesser Whitethroat on Svínoy…

But then I flushed a bunting from a ditch. Tek, tek… a soft call. Wow, Little or Rustic Bunting. Then I got good views of the bird and it turned out to be a Little Bunting. But it was duller than the bird last week and after checking photos it is surely a different bird. The eye ring is different the malar stripe is also different. So the 4th Little Bunting for the Faroes was a reality.

The bad thing about being on an island 3 times the size of Fair Isle with lots of cover and no fellow birders is that you lose some birds. At one point I flushed a pipit that called like a Pechora Pipit (yes, they do call now and then), but it vanished. I only saw it again very briefly flying into a dense garden just before departure…

When I came to Fugloy it was very cloudy and dark. I managed to find 10+ Goldcrests, some Blackcaps and Bramblings – but that was it before it was pitch dark. But the island does have potential.
