Willow Tits and Iceland Gulls

3w Iceland Gull - Hvide Sande, Denmark

Yesterday SEP and I went out birding again in Vestjylland. First we went to a place where both Green and Black Woodpecker have been seen, but we did’t find any. Then we went to a place where some Two-barred Crossbills have been seen. We didn’t see anything a first, but suddenly SEP spotted two birds with double with wing-bars that flew away. We went to the place where the birds had landed and almost right away I heard the “toy-trumpet”-call several times – Two-barred Crossbill! We searched for them for about one hour but we couldn’t relocate the birds. But we found a Treecreeper which made SEP very happy as it is rather difficult to see in Vestjylland.

Then we went to Skænken Sø – a place known for having a few Willow Tits. Almost as soon as we reached the place we heard the ti-ti-dae-dae-dae call and two Willow Tits gave superb views down to a few meters. unfortunately we good lens is being repaired at the moment, so I didn’t get as good pics as I could have.

We then went to Hestholm where we saw two White-tailed Eagles, Pin-tailed Ducks, Shovelers, Teals and Wigeons. At Værnengene we saw 9 Ruff, more than hundred Dunlins and lots of Golden Plovers and Lapwings.

While driving around we encountered several flocks of Whooper Swans and we also found 8 Bewick’s Swans among them – including two juveniles. In Hvide Sande we saw four Iceland Gulls and two Glaucous Gulls. All in all a very good day with lots of good birds.
