Jizz

Iceland Gulls fighting for food

It is legal to hunt all gulls on the Faroes. Every year a few Iceland Gulls are shot. This means that a number of birds have been examined in the hand. About 90% of these have been females and this indicates that we normally see many more females than males. Thus there is a danger that we come to think that the neat appearance of these birds can be applied to all Iceland Gulls.

Polar Star - yes, the Iceland Gulls are Polar Stars!

The jizz (general impression of size and shape) varies a lot on the larger gulls between small females and large males. Today I wanted to get some shots of large Iceland Gulls in order to study the jizz. And it was very interesting. There were 104 Iceland Gulls including 11 Kumlien’s Gulls in Klaksvík today.

Pale Herring Gull with Iceland Gull

There is tremendous variation in such a large gathering of birds – some birds are even bigger than the average Herring Gulls and the head of some is 1½ times broader than on the smallest it seems. But have a look at the pics to see for your self!

Large adult Iceland Gull

Large 3w Iceland Gull

Rather large 2w Iceland Gull

Not really neat and round-headed!

A more round-headed 3w Iceland Gull

A mean looking 3w bird with a dark iris - it could be a Kumlien's Gull

A large adult and a small 1w Iceland Gull

A neat, slim and round-headed 1w Kumlien's Gull

But even the 1w can come in large versions!

And here comes a well-marked adult Kumlien's Gull

Kumlien’s Gull tend on average to be heavier build than Iceland Gulls. But there are small and neat Kumlien’s Gulls and heavy and large Iceland Gulls – so the overlap is almost total IMO.
